Steppenwolf ' s self titled was a "barn burner" of a 1st album. An equal balance of hits and album cuts that the counter culture of the time, that bounced between the am & fm dial, found to be not only valid but also edgy/5().

Steppenwolf is best known primarily for its party-hearty rock & roll anthems. But with 's MONSTER, the band's fourth release, Steppenwolf showed a political side. While the album didn't contain any radio-ready top hits, the album as a whole remains an impressive accomplishment/5(36).

Steppenwolf entered the studio for their recording debut with a lot of confidence -- based on a heavy rehearsal schedule before they ever got signed -- and it shows on this album, a surprisingly strong debut album from a tight hard rock outfit who was obviously searching for a hook to hang their sound on. The playing is about as loud and powerful as anything being put .

The domestic MCA CDs of Steppenwolf's first two albums offered surprisingly good sound quality for s reissues of the late '80s. That must be testament to the sheer power of the master tapes, which overcame most of the limitations of late-'80s digital audio and the usual timidity of the engineers of that era.
